SOMNIA-SPECIFIC QUESTIONS
1. Dreams are how Sleep chooses you. What might draw your character into Somnia— a wound, a wish, a weakness? Would they follow the dream, or run from it?
Jaskier is a dreamer by nature, an artist. He wants the world to be better than it is and is willing to find his ways of making that happen, even if they're small. It's a wish, maybe - trying to capture that better future, some nebulous happiness - it's what he's always asking Geralt, 'What do you want?' but it's one he's willing to work towards rather than idly wish for. He comes from a world where wars and plagues and famines are common place, and getting worse and worse every year it seems. Much as a peaceful life of sitting back and writing his music would be nice, it's clear that nothing is going to get better if people just keep their head down and do nothing. So even the faintest promise of making the world better has Jaskier running towards with breakneck speed.
2. Somnia is a slow unraveling—of worlds, and of selves. How does your character respond to fear, transformation, and losing control? Do they fight, adapt, collapse?
Jaskier has the reputation of a coward and while he's not winning any medals for running onto the front lines swinging a sword, he IS often there strangely enough. Or not, if you know him. Curiosity regularly wins out for Jaskier when it comes to danger. He needs the story, and the best way to get those details is first hand observation which means a little danger is in the cards, and that has required him to learn how to adapt to it since he sure as hell isn't fighting. Not successfully, anyway, though every now and then he'll make an attempt that at best might serve as a distraction while the actual warriors come rushing in with the cavalry. Jaskier will bitch and moan and complain the whole time, but he will roll with the punches as good as any fighter even if he has to spend the whole fight hiding under a table.
3. Connection is the only constant. What kind of bonds does your character form— fast and burning, slow and wary, deep and desperate? How might that shape their time in this world?
Jaskier is one of those people who makes connections (good and bad) wherever he goes. He's got a bombastic personality that means people tend to either love him, hate him, or both.
Often both.
Let's face it, the first thing he's going to do when he finds himself in an unknown and possibly dangerous situation is find himself some friends* to cozy up to ASAP. (*friends in this case meaning people he enjoys the company of or people he can at least hide behind when a table is unavailable to duck under) Yes for his own protection, but he also gets lonely if he doesn't have company. Jaskier wilts without attention, without company. He's never seen without some form of it, even if it's company that complains about him being around. He's not a solitary creature and probably would go stir crazy if left to his own company for too long. Too long meaning three days at most. Given how quickly he tends to make connections one would think they'd be broadly the shallow kind, but Jaskier has a way of making sure they stick. Mainly by continuing to show up and bother people so he's impossible to forget. Repeated: love him or hate him or both.
4. What are two major forces in your character’s personality that are often in conflict? (Ex: logic vs emotion, power vs guilt, obedience vs rage, etc.)
At where he is at this point in canon, probably wanting versus being wanted. He makes connections easily and tends to make strong ones, but it seems like he's always just a little more on the outside than he wants to be. He's willing to run into the fray, but he's not a warrior. Risking his neck doesn't seem to matter quite as much to certain people when it doesn't come with swinging a sword along with it. Even though he's been in Geralt's life longer than many others, he's still seemingly easily thrown away in comparison to someone who doesn't seem to even want to be in his life half the time. Both 'too much' but never quite enough. It doesn't help that Jaskier is very firmly the type to refuse to compromise himself, so he's left just floundering when being him doesn't just work since he refuses to be anyone else.

Why does this Vessel type feel appropriate for your character? Strength doesn't much matter to Jaskier, and it's more his vibe to be the odd man out companion to those seen as 'monsters' rather than one himself.
Choose one OR list three subclass options within your chosen Vessel type that you think would suit them: Pyromancer - Passion and emotion over reason suits Jaskier as those are always what he goes with when he has to pick. Moreover, very recently Jaskier ran afoul of a mad mage that used fire in a way magicians usually avoid in the Witcher world and still bears the scars from it - finding out what powers are at his beck and call will have him avoiding them as much as possible thanks to those fearful memories he refuses to admit still bother him. So that will be fun.

Personality:
Artistic He's a bard, it's maybe a given, but especially after having done it for this many years Jaskier has a reputation for his way with words and the music he crafts. Being an artist is the thing he values and prides most about himself, what he sees as intrinsically him. He loves to create, to put into words feelings that seem otherwise indescribable.
Sensitive ... However, the downside of this is while he can take just about any kind of insult hurled at his person without a blink, insult his music, his craft? He kind of loses it unless you're his friend whose opinion he values. Even then, he still does lose it, just by being upset and hurt instead of angered. It doesn't matter if he knows he shouldn't rise to the bait, if his life is literally on the line if he does, he can't stop himself.
Stubborn And when he gets on something, it's very hard to get him off of it. Jaskier is stubborn as any ox, uncaring that he's often the most fragile thing in any situation. If he's set his mind on something, little can talk him out of it or deter him though many have tried.
Positive That stubbornness isn't all bad, though. It also manifests in Jaskier being overwhelmingly positive, though that's not necessarily a good trait depending on who you're asking. The idea that things won't work out, that good men will not ultimately triumph over evil is kind of something he just refuses to accept. He will look on the bright side, and if one doesn't exist he will make one. Yes this is a threat. It was part of this attitude that had him ultimately help smuggle elves out of the North to safety when politics turned against them. Sometimes for good to happen you need to do it yourself, "someone needs to do something" and the realization that you are, in fact, someone.
Friendly He's good at manipulating emotions to a certain degree - he's good at making people care, though not necessarily in a friendly way. Sometimes in a 'I'm going to punch him in the face' way. Most all these start off as ATTEMPTS to be friendly if nothing else. Jaskier likes people, alright? Likes them in all their messy terrible joy, and he loves being among them and interacting with them. He's a social animal and he makes friends wherever he goes, sometimes against all odds.
Suitability: Jaskier has in the last couple years grown a sense of responsibility, especially to those who cannot protect themselves. He might gripe and grouse and moan about it, but Jaskier's first instinct is to help someone if there's any possible thing he can do to assist. Even if, given the people he's surrounded with, mostly what he can offer is an additional target to keep the thing they're fighting distracted.
Powers/Abilities: As far as magical abilities are concerned, Jaskier doesn't have any. He's a completely normal human with all the fragilities that come with that. That said given how often important events in Geralt's life happen indirectly because of Jaskier specifically, one could argue he's Destiny's Albatross.
For non-magical powers, Jaskier has a musical talent with lute and voice for playing as well as writing his own music. He's exceptionally well educated and speaks multiple languages from the Continent he comes from. He's a great performer overall, able to get reactions out of people for good and ill alike. He lies well and easily, even holding up under some pretty nasty torture.
Entity Affinity: The Web Hey remember the whole Destiny's Albatross thing...? I could make a case for a few different entities the fact that Jaskier seems inadvertently but inherently involved every time Destiny (a very real thing in his canon) decides to pull it's strings seem the most important. That said he's less like Annabelle Cane and more like Annabelle Cane's favorite place to get takeout. Little emotional manipulations that anyone deeply social does are the most he's really inclined towards.
Inventory: The clothes on his back and a bottle of questionable alcohol that is most similar to moonshine in nature. It's been a rough few days.

Witcher!Jaskier AU
While I can't find it now I stumbled on a bunch of fanart from an artist I liked of him as a cat school witcher and I can't get it out of my head. Still his canon age so just a baby by witcher standards but now there's an excuse for why he still looks the same as he did at 19/20. Alternately he could also be wolf school and either one of the last ones made before the whole thing happened where they lost their ability to make witchers (second youngest maybe because obviously Lambert is baby) or actually the only person left older than him is Vesemir not that he acts befitting his age.

Post S2 Awkward Roommate
Would be especially fun with someone else from the wolf school as Jaskier gets stuck there for the winter too basically. A-OK with going with game or book versions of them since I'm under the impression the netflix show treated some worse than others (cough Eskel cough). He's arguably the nicer of Geralt's exes that is hanging out.
Bonus History Headcanon
Okay so since across multiple books, several games, and three seasons there's still not a whole lot about Jaskier's history I have my own headcanon I work off of. Obviously he (canonically) keeps this shit to himself and doesn't talk about it, but for anyone who is curious as to what's going on in his head and past:
Lettenhove is an extremely small holding within Kerack's territory. They used to be of greater significance and importance but a series of several unfit heirs diminished their lands and fortunes pretty severely (this is why Lettenhove is not on any maps you can find in game, they were already diminishing with Geralt was a kid). The Pankratz family basically only has title by virtue of politeness in noble society. So, nobility, but uh basically only the name to show for it.
Jaskier's severely aged father is the current Count Pankratz and has mostly managed to avoid major fuckups in his time. Hasn't really brought the family up again but he has mostly managed to not make things worse.
"Mostly" because he did have one major fuckup: too damn many sons.
Lettenhove could have barely supported the traditional heir-and-a-spare. Thanks to some bad planning, they have that and three more with Jaskier being the fifth of five sons.
(The countess REALLY REALLY wanted a daughter. She never got one. Jaskier's birth being a difficult one that put her in danger was kind of the only reason they stopped. Jaskier does not have a good relationship with his mother as she kinda blames him for never getting her girl)
So his education and courtesy title of Viscount was pretty much all Jaskier ever got from being nobility. Like, he's going to get shit all when his father dies.
He was more or less explicitly told that the best thing he could do for his family was marry well - likely a wealthy merchant's daughter who would have enough money to overlook that Jaskier had none in trade for the hit of legitimacy that a noble bloodline would bring.
Which is why he is both very skilled at living rough in spite of being nobility and did not look back once he went to University.
He's been home like a handful of times since he initially left. Mostly he communicates to his family by the rare letter. Like, what are they going to do to get him to fall in line, threaten to cut him off? He's got nothing to be cut off from.
All of his success he built himself.

I'm currently MAINLY familiar with the Netflix show, but I have read The Last Wish, The Sword of Destiny and am working my way through Blood of Elves.
